We often don’t realize if we chose something out of our personal liking or just because some influencer has managed to influence us. Those 10 ads on every YouTube video we see or between our television shows keep hounding us to buy this, do that, go here, believe them, and lose our ability to judge.  Social media today has created a farce of what is good or bad, right or wrong, perfect or imperfect, and clouded our judgment. 

Those airbrushed photos or unrealistic diet plans are not practical for the layman, they have set beauty standards no one can achieve. This can lead to body image issues, self-esteem problems, and unhealthy approaches to exercise and dieting. The constant exposure to highlight reels and curated content on social media can create an atmosphere of comparison and self-doubt for Gen Z. Seeing others’ seemingly flawless fitness journeys can make them feel inadequate or discouraged about their own progress. This can result in a lack of motivation, diminished self-confidence, and even the abandonment of sports and fitness pursuits.

The emphasis on likes, comments, and shares has caused people to forget what real and authentic content is, a few dollar bills, and they seem to change their tune about anything! Fad diet plans to weight-loss gummies seem to work well with their bodies. Instead of focusing on a healthy body and lifestyle, they preach the importance of looking thin and fit. 

Gymming has become the new cultural norm, gone are the days of playing a sport or doing yoga to stay active and fit. It’s all about those 6 pack abs or biceps that nobody but them cares about! In the sports and fitness worlds, social media can be an ideal breeding ground for misinformation and harmful practices. Influencers with limited knowledge or false credentials may advocate dangerous training techniques, quick-fix solutions, or fad diets. Gen Z, who are looking for advice and inspiration, may fall, victim, to these misleading messages, jeopardizing their well-being and long-term health.

Influencer marketing is growing as an effective strategy for product marketing managers seeking to draw in Gen Z customers. Influencers, who are social media celebrities with a huge following and a substantial influence on their followers’ behaviour, give product marketing managers a more practical and relatable means to connect and interact with customers. However, their Ads may not always be real or authentic, it is different to use a product and to market it. How many influencers who promote a certain product or brand actually use it themselves?

There are of course many athletes who promote endorsed brands on their social media however most of them do not use them. Brands like Nike, Puma, and Adidas get the best of the best to promote their companies and products, most often athletes. Their campaigns are however much better planned, structured, and inclusive than those of social media influencers.  There are many influencers who try and be as authentic as they can be on social media, they share both the pretty and ugly, good and bad, reel and real! And to be honest, that bit of real, raw, unfiltered truth is what helps them grow. Influencers and online communities also introduce Gen Z to new sports and fitness trends. Through their content, they showcase various activities, workouts, and challenges that capture their attention. Whether it’s a viral dance routine on TikTok, a new workout regimen on YouTube, or a fitness challenge on Instagram, these platforms expose Gen Z to a wide range of sports and fitness options they might not have considered otherwise.

Influencers and online communities also help break down barriers and promote inclusivity in sports and fitness. They advocate for body positivity, diversity, and acceptance, challenging traditional stereotypes and standards. By embracing individuals of all shapes, sizes, genders, and abilities, they inspire Gen Z to participate in sports and fitness activities without fear of judgment or exclusion.

The goal is not to get those 6-pack abs, or round booty but to stay fit and healthy, not fall sick regularly, building your strength and metabolism. It is crucial you set your goals for the right reason and make them realistic, nobody is going to get abs just from crunches! 

In the end, what sort of content you consume is directly proportional to how it impacts your mind, beliefs, and body! If you are likely to get influenced to eat/drink or do something with just one post or story then it is important you take a look at your social media. Consciously choose to follow those who create a positive impact in your life, and make an effort to change in ways that will benefit you. Pick up a sport to add more physical activity in everyday life, and work out so you feel those endorphins, and not because some profile on social media managed to sway you their way!
