Indian sports

Sports scandals have existed for as long as sports have. This is also true in Indian sports history, where important lessons can be learned from past mistakes. This article delves into the top five controversial sports events in Indian history that have sparked the most intense discussions.

In this post, you’ll learn about

  1. Commonwealth Games Scam (2010)
  2. Olympic Association’s Suspension (2012-2014)
  3. Sania Mirza’s Attire Controversy (2005)
  4. The Cricket Match-Fixing Scandal
  5. Controversies around Doping

Commonwealth Games Scam (2010):

Indian Sports

Allegations of widespread corruption and poor management hampered the preparations for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. India’s plans to host the major athletic event have been clouded by reports of poor building work, lacking infrastructure, and financial theft. The dispute drew harsh condemnation from both local and foreign quarters and cast doubt on India’s capacity to organize such gatherings. The stigma created by the incident could not be totally removed, despite the organization and performance of the games ultimately being successful for Indian athletes.

Olympic Association’s Suspension (2012-2014):

Olympic rings | Department for Culture, Media and Sport | Flickr

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) faced a significant setback when it was suspended from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 2012 to 2014. This incident marked a notable low point in India’s sporting history, shedding light on the imperative need for transparency, accountability, and transformative reforms in the governing institutions. Additionally, it exposed inherent flaws within the country’s sports administration.

Due to concerns of fraud and election-related mismanagement, the IOC suspended the IOA in December 2012. As a result, Indian athletes were barred from competing under their national flag at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and may face similar restrictions in future events, including the Summer Olympics. The ban served as a wake-up call for Indian officials, and numerous adjustments were required before India could be considered again!

Sania Mirza’s Attire Controversy (2005):

Indian Sports

Sania Mirza, a rising star of the early 2000s, faced the first hurdle in 2005 when she got into a scuffle with religious orthodoxy for wearing a short skirt. A group of Muslim clerics issued a Fatwa against Mirza over her tennis skirt. Calling her a ‘corrupting influence’ who leaves nothing to the imagination with her short skirts, religious clerics demanded she wear something more covering.  The media also made a spectacle out of Mirza’s skirt, adding to the harassment of the young 18-year-old tennis player.

None of these sexist comments budged Sania Mirza, and she replied, It’s her choice to wear whatever she wants.

The outrage over Sania Mirza’s clothes sparked debates about fundamental rights such as gender equality and free expression. Many people joined together to protect Mirza’s right to wear whatever she wanted and play tennis for as long as she wanted without jeopardizing her identity. The conversation expanded beyond sports, shedding light on broader concerns about women’s autonomy and shifting societal norms in India.

The Cricket Match-Fixing Scandal:

Page 7 | Royalty-free competition photos free download | Pxfuel

The match-fixing scandal that unfolded during the early 2000s had a profound impact on Indian cricket, given the nation’s deep-rooted reverence for the sport. The involvement of prominent cricketers in suspicions of match-fixing and spot-fixing created a serious problem that shook the foundations of Indian cricket.

In 2000, the Delhi Police uncovered a connection between bookies and a number of players. This raised suspicions of fixing for financial gain. Among those implicated were popular cricketers such as Mohammed Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja, and Manoj Prabhakar.

The match-fixing incident significantly eroded the trust of cricket fans and tarnished the reputation of the sport. In response to the public outcry, both the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) initiated investigations to address the issue.

Following the match-fixing scandal, several players, including Azharuddin and Jadeja, were implicated and received extended cricket bans. The controversy also brought to light the widespread corruption within cricket, leading to legal complications and court battles. In response, the BCCI and other governing bodies in cricket introduced more stringent anti-corruption measures, such as conducting training sessions for players and officials.

Controversies around Doping

World Anti-Doping Agency launches investigation | 🇩🇪Profes… | Flickr

Doping has always been an issue in the world of sports, no matter where you go. As doping falls under the category of cheating, it is not well received. When it comes to Indian sports, there have been a few instances of doping controversies.

The cases of doping breaches have periodically undermined the reputation of Indian athletes, beginning with the case of weightlifter Kunjarani Devi in the late 1990s and continuing with the suspension of renowned sprinters like Dutee Chand in more recent years. These issues have damaged people’s reputations, but they have also brought attention to the necessity for a strict anti-doping culture inside the nation’s athletic environment.

Conclusion:

When In Mumbai, Do Not Miss Breathtaking Sunsets At These Spots In The City | WhatsHot Mumbai

Sports scandals in Indian history have influenced the narrative of the country’s sports heritage, while also generating moral concerns. These five experiences have left an indelible mark on me and serve as a daily reminder that society’s complexities and problems are not restricted to sports. These episodes sparked controversy, but they also resulted in adjustments and a renewed commitment to preserving the culture of quality, fair play, and integrity in Indian sports.

The reigning world champions take on the first-time semi-finalists in a clash that will determine who will take on Argentina in the final of Qatar 2022! France are looking to defend their title while the Moroccans carry the hopes of their entire continent on their shoulders by virtue of being the first African nation to qualify for the quarterfinals of a World Cup.

France

France have just beaten one of the best sides of the tournament in England and are looking very likely to go on and win the tournament to become only the second nation to retain the trophy. Olivier Giroud and Griezzman have linked up superbly this tournament, with the former coming in clutch every time his nation needs a goal and the latter creating chance after chance for the side. Griezzman has played a vital role in pressing the midfield and defense of the opposition, converting possession in the opposition half, and making the French attack very dangerous. He has averaged 0.8 interceptions and 1.8 tackles per game, numbers that are tough to come by for a player in his position. Kylian Mbappe will be ever so threatening, and his battle against clubmate Hakimi will be one for the ages. The French have shown some worrying signs, with Rabiot and Upamecano falling ill a day prior to the game. The midfield battle will be the most important, as the Moroccan midfielders are the ones who have kept every single attacker they’ve faced out of the game. The French midfield has always been a cause for concern, but Tchouameni and Rabiot have made it seem like it’s the least of their worries. This game might finally be the one where the French midfield could be put into question.

France football team

Morocco

Morocco have been a bundle of surprises in this tournament, not only for having reached this stage but for how they have reached this stage of the tournament. The team has conceded only an own goal in the entirety of the tournament and has beaten the likes of Spain, Portugal, and Belgium to reach this stage. Ounahi, Boufal, Amrabat, Ziyech, Hakimi, Bono, Saiss, El-Nesyri, Aguerd, and Mazaraoui are all names we just hear about during the regular seasons but have become stars on a global stage at Qatar 2022. The team has knocked out two neighboring teams from the tournament and will look to knock out Spain’s neighbors on the eastern front in the semi-finals. The team is incredibly hard to break down and create chances against, leaving teams no space or time to get close to their box. Even if the ball gets close to the goal, Bono is there to save it. The team will be careful against France, as they aren’t like any other team that they have faced before, and with their captain and central defender Roman Saiss injured, the team will have to find a way to support their backline.

morocco football team

Key Battles to look out for

Tchouameni vs Amarabat- Both players will look to keep the other out of the game and ensure midfield dominance over the other. The one who wins this battle will dictate the tempo in this France vs Morocco game.

Ziyech vs Hernandez: Ziycech is key to creating chances with his inch-perfect crosses, and his tussle with Hernandez will decide how many key chances Morocco creates. Morocco will look to exploit the left-hand side after Hernandez’s showing against England.

Hakimi vs Mbappe: The best battle of them all as the PSG teammates take each other on in a battle of pace, skill, and agility. Both extremely talented players will go head-to-head as Hakimi will look to keep Ziyech quiet throughout the France vs Morocco game.

Mbappe and hakimi football player

Conclusion

In this France vs Morocco . Morocco has had a great run this world cup but has picked up loads of injuries, along with fatigue that is seen on the faces of the players. This game might be a little too much for the North African side, as the French frontline is vicious and fierce. France should be able to see the game through, but Morocco will not go down without a fight. The balance of two continents lies on the shoulders of these two nations, with the victor creating history by reaching a World Cup final.

Argentina takes on Croatia in the first semi final of the FIFA World Cup 2022. No one would’ve ever imagined these two teams would meet at this stage of the tournament, but that’s how unpredictable sports are.

In this post, you’ll Read about
Argentina
Croatia
Key Battles

Argentina

Argentina will be out for revenge after losing to Croatia in the group stages of the 2018 World Cup. This was Leo Messi’s last realistic shot at making a World Cup final and winning it, and Croatia beating Brazil must’ve felt like a weight being lifted off the Argentine shoulders. Messi scored and assisted in one of the best World Cup quarterfinal games of all time, once again proving how important he is to the side’s attack. Emi Martinez has redeemed himself by making 2 saves in the shootout against the Dutch, sending the Europeans packing. The quarterfinals must’ve been an eye-opener for Argentina, as there were a total of 17 yellow cards shown during the game, just showing how brutal, physical, and intense the game was. Scaloni’s switch to a 3-at-back system to take on the Dutch, man for man, proved to be a master plan as the Dutch fullbacks were taken out of the game in an attacking sense. A worrying sign for Argentina has to be their tendency to concede goals late in the game after leading and dominating most parts of the game. There really should have been no scope for allowing this match to go to penalties, as the game should’ve been done and dusted by the 90th minute. This complacency can cost the South Americans their World Cup.

Leo Messi

Croatia

Croatia beating Brazil has to be the upset of the tournament, as most of the world believed that this was Brazil’s year to finally win a World Cup. Out of all the teams that could’ve knocked Brazil out in the knockouts, Croatia were the last team anyone would have suspected to do so. The Balkan team held their own through the ninety as their warriors in midfield and defense kept out the relentless Brazilian attack. Gvardiol, Modric, Kovacic and Brozovic all put in monster shifts as the team seemed impenetrable. Even after penetrating the defense, the Brazilians just could not find the net against Livakovic, who put in the performance of his life, making 11 saves, the most for a Croatian keeper in a game of football. He went on to be the hero of the penalty shootout as well, saving the first penalty taken by Rodrygo and shifting the momentum in favor of the Croatians. They went on to win their 4th consecutive penalty shootout at the World Cup and seal the semi final berth for themselves. Petokovic must be credited for equalizing in the dying minutes of extra time when everyone thought the Europeans were down and out.

Key Battles

Leo Messi vs Gvardiol- Argentina’s most important source for goals against Croatia’s most important defender will be crucial to the game. The Crotians will allow Messi to come at them, and it’s up to young Gvardiol to stop a man who has never been stopped before.

Rodrigo De Paul vs Luka Modric: The Croatian midfield is a very important aspect of the team’s style of play, With the midfielders converting play and dictating the tempo of the game, stopping Luka Modric from controlling the ball and creating chances will be a task that De Paul will have to undertake to avoid any defensive damage.

Emi Martinez vs Livakovic: Though the two will not directly battle each other, the battle of the better keeper could decide who wins the game. With both teams qualifying via penalty shootouts in which both keepers performed, it could well go down the same route again, requiring the two of them to step up for their nation.

Leo Messi vs Gvardio

Conclusion

This game will be interesting as Argentina will be allowed to barrage the Croatian half of the pitch while the Croatian defense will look to hold strong. With Argentina not having scored more than 2 goals in a game and the Croatians not conceding more than one goal in a game, a single goal will differentiate the two sides in this clash. Croatia will look to play to their strengths and take the game as deep as possible, while Argentina will try to put the game to bed in the first 90.  We predict that the 2014 finalists will beat the 2018 finalists for the win in this amazing fixture.

The headlines of the World Cup so far is been England vs France. Although it is the headliner, the media buzz has been quiet, with both sets of journalists likely to react after the game is played. The two countries are fierce rivals and will give it their all to book the final semi-final spot in the World Cup.

In this post, you’ll Read about
England
France
Key battles to look out for

England

England have had an extremely strong start to the tournament, conceding only twice in 4 games. Their 2 goals conceded came in their 6-2 win against Iran. The team has scored 12 goals in 4 games showing great attacking promise. Harry Kane, Saka, Rashford and Foden have all been pieces that have solved the attacking puzzle. In defense, Harry Maguire has really stepped up his game alongside the likes of Shaw, Stones, and Walker. The English midfield has been the most impressive aspect of the side, with Jude Bellingham having been their player of the tournament so far with 93% passing accuracy and 2.8 tackles per game. Declan Rice has contributed to the effort with a passing accuracy of 94%. With these two players, the ball turnovers are very quick, and they catch the opposition defense on the break with accurate passing and pace. This was very clearly seen against Senegal. The team will be high on confidence after their 3-0 win against Senegal in the round of 16 and will be all set to take on their neighbors from across the English Channel.

England vs France

France

Everyone thought the World Cup curse would affect France, but they have been nowhere close to being knocked out of the tournament. France have scored 9 goals in 4 games, of which Kylian Mbappe has contributed to 7 goals with 5 goals and 2 assists. He has been the stand-out performer across all teams and is in contention to win the Golden Ball award. Olivier Giroud has been superb in terms of supporting Mbappe’s runs and chance creation, with his excellent hold up play and finishing. The most underrated out of the French front three has been Griezzman who has created 5 big chances for the team but only 1 has amounted to an assist. His progressive passing and chance creation has been very vital for the French attack. The French defense is a cause of concern as the team has failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their games. This will have to be looked at if they desire to keep the English attack away from the sight of goal.

England vs France

Key battles to look out for

Walker vs Mbappe will be the battle that will set up and decide the game. Whether England chooses to start with 4 at the back or 3, Walker will be marking and tracking Mbappe down the whole game, let’s see who wins this battle of pace and strength.

Tchouameni vs Bellingham will be a midfield battle between two young stars that will be for the ages. Both quick, efficient and accurate and there will be only one boss in the middle of the pitch.

Saka vs Hernandez will be an interesting battle as Saka has been in great goal scoring form and Hernandez likes to play high up the pitch, will he be able to track back and hold off Saka on the cut? Or will Saka play deeper to counter the hammering attack that comes along the French left side? The fourth quarter final will decide this battle!

England vs France

Conclusion

This England vs France game should be one of the best in world cup history with two of the best sides at the tournament locking horns. It will have everything from great attacking, defending, saves and fights. We predict this game to go down to the wire and eventually to a penalty shootout.

The intercontinental neighbors take each other on in a spicy clash in the quarterfinals of the World Cup. No one would’ve thought Morocco would’ve reached this stage of the tournament, let alone play against Portugal, a team synonymous with them, right down to the colors of their jerseys. Portugal vs Morocco face-off

Key battles to look out for

Portugal vs Morocco

Portugal

Portugal have won 3 out of their 4 games in the buildup to this fixture, with youngsters taking charge all over the pitch. Bruno Fernandes has been their most important player, with 2 goals and three assists for the squad. The biggest revelation has to be Goncalo Ramos who replaced Ronaldo in the round of 16 against Switzerland, and went on to score a hattrick, filling in the biggest boots that he could have ever filled. The team absolutely smoked the Swiss, scoring 6 with Pepe, Gurreiro and Leao getting in on the act. The team has had no shortage of goals, scoring 13 goals in just 4 games. Diogo Dalot has come as the biggest surprise for the squad by outperforming and benching Joao Cancelo. The squad could do better defensively, having kept only 1 clean sheet in 4 games. Portugal have gone under the radar for being one of the best performing teams at the World Cup, and the 6-1 victory was a call to everyone to ignore the side. Their scoring prowess will be important against the best defensive team of the tournament in Morocco.

Portugal vs Morocco

Morocco

The biggest shock entry into the quarter finals has to be the North West African side Morocco, who managed to defeat Spain, a team that scored 7 goals in one match against Costa Rica. What was even more impressive was that they did not allow Spain to find the back of the net in regular time as well as in penalties. Morocco have been so solid in defense that they haven’t let an opposition player score against them, they have only conceded an own goal by Aguerd. What makes Morocco’s defense stand out is that they kept Croatia and Belgium at bay and went on to concede 1 shot against Spain, who came into the match with an xG of over 2.5. Amrabat’s control in midfield, holding off the midfielders of the Spanish squad, had to be the most impressive performance in midfield. Ounahi won 7 out of 10 duels against his opponents, whereas the entire backline solidified the defense. Keeper Bono had to be the player of the game, keeping all 3 Spanish penalties out, ensuring the squad reached their first-ever quarter-final of the tournament. Hakim Ziyech has been crucial on the attacking front and will cause problems for the Portuguese defense. They are the only African nation left in the World Cup and will carry the hopes of the entire continent on their shoulders, as seen by individual African teams in past World Cups. Will the 4-3-3 of Morocco be enough to ensure a first-ever semi-final spot for an African nation? Or will Aguerd’s injury cause problems for the Atlas Lions? Only one team stands in the way of the answer.

Portugal vs Morocco

Key battles to look out for

Ziyech vs Raphael Gurreiro will be one to look out for, as an in-form Ziyech taking on a high flying Gurreiro who spends so much time in the opposition box will be a great battle. Amrabat vs Bruno Fernandes will be a battle in midfield that could decide the game, if Amrabat manages to pacify the main supply of the Portuguese attack, we could be in for dry attacking spells from the Europeans. Felix vs Hakimi will be the most interesting one in a battle of pace vs strength as both experienced players who play for top clubs in Europe go head on along the Portuguese right. Hakimi can prove to be a tough cookie and will threaten in attack as well in Portugal vs Morocco.

Portugal vs Morocco

Conclusion

We predict this exciting Portugal vs Morocco clash to go down to the wire, with Portugal winning 2-1. Morocco won’t go down without a fight, and Portugal will know that. The attacking threat that Portugal possess on the pitch and on the bench may prove to be too much for the Moroccans.

Introduction

Brazil takes on Croatia in the first quarter final at the Education City Stadium on Friday, December 9, 2022. It will be an exciting encounter as the 5 time champions take on the 2018 runners up in their 5th encounter, all previously won by Brazil in Brazil vs Croatia.

In this post, you’ll Read about
Croatia
Brazil
Key battles to look out for

Croatia

The Balkan country has limped into the quarter-finals with only 1 win in 4 in regular time. Their best game came against Canada, whom they beat 4-1 after going down a goal in the second minute. They had goalless draws in their other group games, which meant that they finished second in their group behind Morocco. Croatia took on Japan on in the round of 16, going on to beat them on penalties after an exhilarating 1-1 draw in regular time. Their best players have undoubtedly been their defenders, who kept two clean sheets and kept the relentless Japanese attack at bay. The standout player in the back line has been Gvardiol who has made key tackles and interceptions in all the games. Lovren and Livakovic have contributed immensely in defense, whereas Perisic has been a key member in attack with 1 goal and 2 assists, contributing to more than 50% of the team’s goals. Kramaric has contributed with 2 goals against Canada and will be a threat in attack. A worry for the team starts with the injury that Modric incurred during the team’s game against Japan, forcing him to be subbed off. The golden ball winner of the 2018 World Cup will be crucial to the Croatian midfield as a player and a leader. Overall the team has scraped through to reach this stage, but as seen at the past World Cup, they are very capable of causing an upset, so don’t rule them out just yet.

Brazil vs Croatia

Brazil

The Brazilians have lit up the world cup with their goals and their samba, painting the streets of Qatar yellow with happiness and joy. The team has won 3 out 4 games and only lost the 1 game where the squad was completely rotated after they secured knockout qualification. The Brazilians look fearless in attack and as solid as a rock in defense. The South Americans saw out the group stage with ease, winning their first two games and losing what seemed to be a dead rubber game for them. They went on to dismantle South Korea 4-1 in the round of 16. They put the game to bed in the 36th minute when they scored their 4th goal, all coming from different scorers. Richarlison has been the most important player in attack with 4 goals in 3 starts, only 1 behind tournament leader Mbappe. Vinicius Jr. has also played an important role in the attack with 1 goal and 2 assists, whereas Paqueta and Raphina have gotten in on the act as well by scoring and creating big chances. Neymar’s return to the squad and on the scoresheet is the biggest boost the team needed. Thiago Silva and Marquinhos look like they almost cannot be beaten, with the duo only conceding once when starting together, which too was a belter from well outside the box. Brazilian coach Tie has also made it a point to give every player a World Cup appearance, which was completed as he subbed keeper Alisson off for third choice keeper Weverton, indicating how good the squad is and how well their chemistry is with each other. The only worry for Brazil at the moment is their left back position, with both first-choice left-backs Telles and Sandro injured. Brazil will be flying high, with a nonstop attack against the Croatian defense and this should serve as an attacking masterclass for all.

Brazil vs Croatia

Key Battles

The most important battle of the game will be Modric vs Casemiro, both of whom have been vital to their team’s midfield, be it converting possession or making progressive passes, Watching the ex Madrid teammates from the legendary Madrid midfield will be like a Thanksgiving feast at Christmas for all. Persic vs Militao will be important to the Croatian attack as they will look to exploit the Brazilian right side in their quest for goals. A natural left footed winger vs a right footed center back playing the right-back role could really show the chinks in the Brazilian armor. Another battle will be Richarlison vs Gvardiol, which will be important to the Brazilian cause. Gvardiol will look to win aerial battles as well as intercept any crosses coming into Richarlison because everything he touches inside the box looks to be going in. If Richarlison loses his man and is in on goal, consider it lights out for the European team.

Brazil vs Croatia

Conclusion

This will be an interesting contest in Brazil vs Croatia, almost like a David vs Goliath. Croatia has been renowned for being giant killers and could really step on the feet of the Brazilians, but on the other hand, Brazil looks ruthless. Based on these factors, we predict Brazil to win the encounter 3-1.

The Netherlands take on Argentina in one of the biggest quarterfinal games of the 2022 World Cup. The Oranje will look for revenge over the South Americans after bowing out to them on penalties during the 2014 World Cup semi finals now again it’s Netherland vs Argentina.

In this post, you’ll Read about

Argentina
Key Battles to look out for

The Netherlands

The Dutch have had smooth sailing so far, remaining unbeaten in all their games. They took apart the USA in the round of 16, beating them 3-1 with Memphis Depay, Denzel Dumfries and Daley Blind all getting in on the act. Blind also assisted once, whereas Dumfries assisted the two other goals. The Dutch fullbacks took apart the USA, putting in cross after cross from the wings, most of which were fruitful in terms of goals. Apart from the fullbacks, they have Cody Gakpo, who is in sublime form, having scored in all the group-stage games. In midfield, Frenkie De Jong has a goal and assist, along with a passing accuracy of 89% in 4 starts. The Dutch defense has been pretty average in the sense that they have conceded in 2 out of their 4 games, making their attack look far better than their defense. The new goalkeeper, Noppert, has truly risen to the occasion, making a total of 15 saves, which is astounding for someone who was going to retire from the sport to join the police force just a few years prior to making his World Cup debut. This has helped solve the constant goalkeeper dilemma that the Dutch have had for the past decade.

Netherland vs Argentina

Argentina

Argentina were one of the teams that were poised to take the World Cup by storm but haven’t really looked convincing even after topping the group and reaching the semi-finals. There could be various reasons for this, such as the team having set such a high standard for themselves, their unbeaten run, or even just knowing Messi plays for them is enough to make fear run through the veins of opponents and opposition fans. The team kicked off the tournament with a loss to Saudi Arabia, which was probably the most shocking result in the history of any World Cup. The Argentines bounced back by taking apart Mexico and Poland, beating both teams 2-0. These two clean sheets were definitely a boost to the Argentine defense and a relief for Emi Martinez, who has made only 2 saves in the entirety of the tournament. Another positive sign for the Argentine defense has been Montiel and Otamendi providing assists, making sure the attack isn’t only reliant on Messi. Speaking of players who have contributed to the attack aside from Messi, Alexis Mac Allister has helped in creating chances and also scoring once, whereas Julian Alvarez has scored 2 times in 2 starts, including the decider against Australia. Alvarez has sidelined Lautaro Martinez, who has scored 0 goals and missed 3 big chances in the tournament. Messi has been the most important player for Argentina, with 3 goals, 1 assist, and 3 big chances created, showing how important he is to their buildup and final third play.

Netherland vs Argentina

Key Battles to look out for

The biggest battle in this Netherlands vs Argentina match to look out for will be Leo Messi vs Virgil van Dijk, two of the best players in their positions. We have seen this battle before, and both players have come out on top against each other, but Messi just edged it over VVD, but that’s just Messi with anyone. If the Dutch giant can keep Messi out of the game, it will eliminate the majority of the threat that Argentina poses. Molina and Acuna’s efforts to curtail the relentless Dumfries and Blind will be another deciding factor in the game. Otamendi vs Depay is a battle that most aren’t aware of but will be important with the Netherlands relying on crosses in the box to score, making sure the Aerial duels in the box play a large role in the Dutch goal-scoring conquest.

Netherland vs Argentina

Conclusion

All in all, this Netherland vs Argentina, game should be a well-balanced one, with both sides creating chances and defending well. We predict the game will go to penalties again, with both teams looking to play it safe and not commit an attack. The midfield battle for the ball will be intense, with both teams drawing loads of fouls in the buildup.  Be ready for a crackerjack of a contest on the first day of the quarter finals.

Netherlands, also known as the Oranje, have successfully made it to the 2022 World Cup after shockingly missing out in 2018.The Dutchmen seem to have started flying again after crashing out of the previous European Championship under Frank De Boer. The team has found a new lease of life under Louis Van Gaal and are all set to take on Group A at the World Cup.

A brief history of Netherlands at the World Cup

Netherlands have never won a world cup in the past but have always been considered one of the strongest teams in the competition, losing 3 finals in the past. The team can almost be compared to Tottenham Hotspur, owing to having some of the biggest names in football such as Johann Cryuff, Marco Van Basten, Wesley Sneijder, Ruud Gullit and Arjen Robben, yet never amounting to any form of fruition in terms of winning trophies, excluding the 1988 European Championship. Over time, they have come to be known as the bottlers of international football.

Manager Profile

The Dutch are managed by Louis Van Gaal who has been in and out of the team since before the 2014 World Cup. The manager has many accolades to his name in club competitions, the majority coming from the Dutch league. He has turned the squad around in the Nation’s League and the World Cup after they failed to qualify in 2018.

Tactical analysis

The Dutch team hasn’t lost a game in the 2022–2023 Nations League and has lost only 1 out of their 10 world cup qualifiers, making it smooth sailing for them into the world cup. The Netherlands employ a total football approach, which was ironically invented by them in the 1974 World Cup. It enables a free-flowing attack by allowing the forwards to move around freely, improving off-the-ball movement and positioning. Van Gaal uses a 3-5-2 approach to most games, allowing the full backs to move forward to put in crosses for the attack. This 3-5-2 can be switched into a 2-3-5 going forward, with the RCB pushing forward into midfield and the two deep lying centre backs staying behind. This also allows long balls from one of the best ball playing centre backs in the world (Van Dijk) with extra options to play to in front, breaking defensive lines of the oppositions.

Strengths

The strengths of this team could be seen through the goal scoring abilities of multiple players, playing on different positions. Right from one of their most important goal scorers in attack (Depay), who has scored 3 goals in the nations league and was their top scorer in the Euros. Dumfries has proven to be an asset, scoring twice, and assisting once whereas the other wing back, Daley Blind has provided 3 assists as well. Steven Bergwijn is one of the most valuable assets taking 1.45 shots per 90 minutes for the national side. His great form in the Eredivisie with 7 goals and an assist and 2 goals in the UCL will make his form crucial for the team’s success in the world cup. Apart from this, the team has one of the best centre-backs and captains in the world in Virgil Van Dijk, who is their most valuable asset defensively, especially when being hit on the counter. The team plays a very adaptable 5-3-2 formation when they do not have the ball, with the centre-backs dropping back and the two wing-backs playing as full-backs, making them very formidable defensively.  They also have young players to add squad depth and replace players in crucial wingback roles such as Owen Wijndal and Tyrell Malacia.

Weaknesses

One of the most essential aspects of the Dutch attack and defence is the single pivot role played by Frenkie De Jong. His current dip in form could prove to be worrying for the national side as his is key to making successful passes forwards to start attacks and getting out of the press in midfield. Getting caught in the midfield when playing fast high pressing teams could lead to defensive loopholes as the defensive line is high when in possession of the ball. The team also has an issue with their goalkeepers as their shot stopper Tim Krul is said not be unfavoured by LVG for the world cup. The history between the two dates to the 2014 world cup when he won the team a penalty shootout only to not be subbed on for the penalty shootout in the semi-finals against Argentina, which they went on to lose. Sorting out their goalkeeper choice will be one of the most important tasks for the World Cup

 World Cup path

We predict the Dutch team to top their group and advance to the knockouts and get eliminated in the quarter finals by either Argentina or France. They should start off strong against Senegal which will give them the momentum to top their group.

In this post, you’ll Read about
Luis Enrique
Hansi Flick
TITE
Gareth Southgate
Didier Deschamps
Fernando Santos

Luis Enrique

He has been a coach for the past 14 years, coaching some big teams like Barcelona and Roma. He has won multiple tournaments as a manager, such as two La Ligas, the 2015 Champions League, and the Club World Cup. Luis Enrique is famed for using his 4-3-3 formation, dating back to his early coaching days. He took over as Spain manager in 2019 and coached a very young squad to the semi-finals of Euro 2020. He is known for providing opportunities to youngsters and will be one of the most experienced managers at the World Cup. Let’s see what Mr. La Masia is going to show us.

World cup

Hansi Flick

Flick started his coaching career in 1996 and has worked as an assistant coach at Salzburg, Germany, and Bayern Munich until finally becoming the Bayern manager and leading them to win the sextuple in 2020, only achieved once before by any club in Europe. He was also the assistant coach of Germany when they won the 2014 World Cup and will surely add the winning mentality to this Germany squad. He has been the German coach since 2021 and will look to turn the team around after their abysmal exit in 2018.

World cup

TITE

Tite has been managing clubs since 1991 and is one of the most experienced managers at the World Cup. He has mainly managed teams in South America and the Middle East and has been the Brazilian manager since 2016. He has won multiple domestic titles and won the Copa America with Brazil in 2019. It will be interesting to see how TITE manages this star-studded Brazilian line-up, managing the game time and opportunities of multiple big names. His long stint with Brazil should mean that we will see a definite pattern and style of play from this squad. He also won the Club World Cup in 2012, which is like finding a needle in a haystack for a South American team.

World cup

Gareth Southgate

Gareth Southgate has been England manager since 2016 and has successfully managed to take England to the Euro final and a World Cup semi-final. He prefers to use the 3-at-the back system, alternating between a 3-4-3 and a 3-4-2-1 formation. Lately, he has experimented with the 4-3-3 tactic but hasn’t seen much success with it. Southgate has been in the middle of multiple debates where half the fans want him out due to poor performances and underutilization of players in the recent past, and the other half want him to stay as he has done more than any other England manager has done in decades. Southgate has looked to solve the biggest problem with the English side, which was the club vs. country debate that occurred amongst players. There seems to be unison in the squad, which looks like it enjoys playing as a unit.

World cup

Didier Deschamps

The French manager is a World Cup winner as a manager and a player. He won the 2018 World Cup with France as their manager and preferred to use a four-at-back system. He has been trying his hand at the 3-at-the back system, but it looked to have failed in the recent nation’s league. Deschamps has announced that he will opt to go with four at the back this World Cup. Although he will go into the World Cup with loads of confidence, he has his fair share of problems to deal with in terms of injuries to multiple starters like Kante, Pogba, Kimpembe, Benzema, and Nkunku. He will have to manage the squad well and ensure the team stays fit for the tournament.

Didier deschamps

Fernando Santos

Santos is one of the most underrated managers at the tournament. He won the Primeira Liga with Porto in 1998–99 and has won multiple individual awards as a manager for clubs and countries. He is one of the longest-serving managers at the World Cup, having been with Portugal since 2014. With the national side, he won the Euros in 2014 and the nation’s league in 2018–19. This shows that his achievements were not short-lived or based on form or momentum; rather, he has been building a side over the past 8 years. Santos Portugal has always played free-flowing football, mostly employing a three-at-the back system. He likes to build his team around talisman Ronaldo, and that has worked very well for the national side.
