The sports Management industry is on an immaculate rise, with the sector seeing an increase of 11 percent every year!
An estimate was made that 3.7 lakh people are employed across the sports sector.
So when such numbers exist, why shouldn’t you consider a career in sports?
And it’s not like the old times when you had to be an athlete or a coach to be involved in the sports sector. Given how big and complicated the industry has become, there are countless jobs in sports management to target.
Whether it be events, broadcasting, or analytics. The sports industry, especially in India, is always in need of sports management professionals.
And when that is the case, the first step will be to get a professional degree from one of the countless sports management colleges present in the country!
The aim of this article is to make you aware of colleges that offer post-graduation courses in sports management at an affordable fee!
(NOTE: The following 5 colleges maintain a balance between being affordable, and also being high in quality of education. We are sure you will find countless other destinations where the fees are even lower, but the quality of education won’t be!)
The Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM) is the first management institute set up in India in 1953. And the very affordable sports management course it offers was first introduced in 2003.
And from 2010 to 2011, this has become a full-fledged Post Graduate Diploma Course in Sports Management at the University of Calcutta.
It is a full-time course, and you will have to stay in Kolkata to finish it.
With just 1.9 lakh, this is the most affordable course we have on this list.
To be eligible for this college, the candidate must have passed the Bachelor’s Degree (10+2+3 system) in any discipline from any University recognized by the University of Calcutta.
After that, the selection of the candidate will be based on a written exam and personal interviews.
But if you have more spending power, then the following might suit your ambitions better!
The International Institute of Sports Management (IISM) is a premier institution in India dedicated to sports education and management.
Founded in 2010, it offers specialized undergraduate and postgraduate programs focused on various aspects of sports management, marketing, media, and entrepreneurship!
Although it is a private institute, it is affiliated with Mumbai University, and the institute was conferred with the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar 2020 for sports development.
To get in, the students have to take the SMAT test conducted by the university, but the scores of MH-CET are also considered!
Nilesh Kulkarni, an ex-Indian cricketer, is the founder at IISM Mumbai. Because of this, IISM has strong industry connections and partnerships.
The institute collaborates with leading sports organizations, clubs, and professionals to provide students with valuable networking opportunities, internships, and placements.
It might fall on the costlier side of things, but for the strong industry connections, we highly recommend this college!
Executive Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Management
Fees: 7.86 lakhs (2-year course, part-time)
This is the only sports management course in India that comes with the IIM tag! And we all know how valuable that tag is.
This is a very new course launched by IIM, as it tries to dip its toes in the sports sector.
The program will consist of 6 terms spread over a period of 2 years.
And in those 2 years, there will be a total of 560 interactive sessions with a mix of Offline Sessions, Online Sessions, Project Work, and Industrial Visits.
The total course duration will be of 900 Hours!
Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent overall grade point average will be eligible to apply.
Once that is ticked off, there will be a written exam followed by personal interviews to finalize the candidates.
DY Patil University is a huge university under which there are countless courses available, including a 2-year course in Sports business management.
The program focuses on the business and management aspects of the sports industry, providing students with a solid foundation in core business disciplines such as marketing, finance, operations, and strategic management, all within the context of the sports domain.
The expenses of doing this degree are the highest on this list, but it might be justifiable for two reasons.
First, there is the great industry exposure in the arsenal of the college. With countless guest lectures, industry partnerships, internship opportunities, and placement scenarios, this is one of the very best.
Second, is the lavish campus life and fantastic facilities. We all know of the D.Y Patil Cricket Stadium. But apart from that, there is the sports science laboratories, and sports equipment, which provide students with practical exposure to sports management operations.
For eligibility, A candidate must have passed the Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50% Marks from any recognized university.
After which, the candidate will have to take a common entrance exam conducted by the DYPUSM and commonly referred to as DYPCT, followed by Group group discussion and a Personal Interview.

To start with, like any dream, becoming a cricketer also takes a lot of dedication, effort, discipline, and belief. You must put in countless hours of practice, trust your process and keep improving yourself every step of the way.
There is a narrow line between adoring and being passionate about a game, the latter is what you need to establish a career in a certain field. There are a few skills you must possess if you plan on playing professionally for your country, like:
Your hand-eye coordination is remarkable
You have excellent adaptability
You have good flexibility
Are a hard worker and determined to succeed
Your core strength and cardiovascular health are exceptional
You know your strengths and build on it
Are clear about the basic and technical knowledge of the game
A step-by-step on how to become a cricket player:
1) Join a cricket academy:
If you want to be one of the men/women in blue, the first step is to enroll in a cricket academy. Learning from a competent coach can help you become acquainted with the exposure required to excel in this industry.
They assist players in being equipped with essential cricket tips and tricks. Aside from that, the coach’s experience adds brownie points to the challenging journey.
Be sure to go for the best cricket academy in your neighborhood, they will help you showcase your strengths and challenge all of your weaknesses.
In addition, by joining a professional academy, you will be surrounded by competitive teammates who will challenge you to perform better every day.
2) Look out for a supportive coach:
Have you ever wondered why cricket players have such a good rapport with their coaches? This is because coaches not only support you get acquainted with the sport, but they also push you past your limitations so that everyone can discover that hidden personality, which was previously only evident to experienced eyes.
Conduct a thorough check on your coach before deciding which one to hire. Various retired cricketers frequently take up careers as coaches, either at academies or on their own.
And if you are not sure what a ‘good coach’ is like, check out our blog here that will guide you in appointing the best out there!
3). Join your school or college team:
Apart from your coaching, joining these teams will give you important playing opportunities. The more games you play, the better you get. Even Smriti Mandhana, the best female international cricketer, believes that school is the best time for aspiring cricketers.
The scope of sports in educational institutions with clubs and academies is continually expanding. You should take advantage of this opportunity by being picked for school or college cricket teams.
It also gives you an upper hand in this situation and then you can start playing for a team that plays for various private cricket tournaments.
4) Be available for state/district level selections:
Gaining recognition in the cricketing field starts once you start playing for your state/district as a cricket player. Prestigious tournaments like Ranji trophy, Dilip trophy, and Vijay Hazare trophy selections are also a great way for a cricket player to get noticed. The road to selection is not a cakewalk; extensive training as a cricket player needs to be done regularly over a long period of time. Several more aspiring cricket players aim to feature in the starting 11 and make their mark on the field.
During the whole thing, one may come across less or more experienced competitors. Your courage can be seen by exceeding everyone else and displaying genuine capability. You have to show why you are better than the next person!
Becoming a professional player: Post all these selections you go ahead and play the IPL or the World Cup for under 16/19 as applicable. Your selections for that depend on how well you performed in your district/state matches. IPL is a huge platform that has garnered international recognition, becoming a part of any franchise there also ensures you heaps of learning opportunities.
Lastly, keep playing every chance you get, because that is what makes you better. No amount of learning comes close to what you get through the experience. The scorecard will always determine whether you’re eligible for the National team.
All you need to do is practice hard, use proper technique, and believe in yourself. The results will follow. Don’t lose hope, sometimes it takes years to play for your country and sometimes you start as young as 19 years!
Since you play, observe, listen, and understand some of the finest cricketing legends during your time there! Once you display your ability, talent, and overall performance you get noticed and slowly build on that.
Many many players like Tilak Verma. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubhman Gill, etc have been selected based on their performance in these tournaments or World Cups games. Suryakumar Yadav played his first international match at the age of 31 while Yashasvi played the U19 WC! It’s all a culmination of luck, skill, talent, and timing! Have a clear goal, be disciplined, and just keep pushing, you’ll get there! We believe in you!

‘A good coach will make his players see what they can be rather than what they are! – ARA PARSEGHIAN
This saying must be enough to explain the importance of a good coach in every sports player’s life! It is true, a good coach will always help the player more than they think they can. They will push your boundaries, stretch your limits, and ensure you come out as your best version! The road to thriving in athletics takes more than simply talent and perseverance.
But how can you navigate through the large sea of coaching possibilities to find the best fit for your needs?
There is no way around it: Your team’s success is entirely dependent on your sports coach. A great coach must understand more than just the rules of the game and the basic drills of practice. Every coach has a different style, some may be too strict, or too involved, some may not care enough to work on every player; and possibly some may care only about fame and money!
Since this journey is long and a crucial part of your game, you must put in the time and effort to find the right coach that benefits your team.
Here are a few qualities a good coach must have:
Knowledgeable about the sport:
It goes without saying, knowing the sport in and out is the most crucial part of being a coach. They should be knowledgeable about all of the rules as well as the various strategies that can be used during the game. This understanding will assist them in improving the performance of the team member.
Coaches must plan for the season, understand the progressive nature of training adaption, know the rules, and give players a straightforward, structured environment that allows them to succeed. Giving the players a platform to achieve while helping them grow is the key.
Sharing their knowledge:
Having expertise is crucial, but having the confidence to share and seek the opinions of others, especially those outside of your sport, is vital. The top coaches recognize that their role is to educate the athletes. Being a player and working with a team, a Sports coach must not gate-keep information or techniques that would benefit the players.
You must put their well-being and growth above your gain. As young players are ready to soak in all that a coach has to offer, they must provide them with as much information as they can. While also being okay with correction, modification, and changes that occur with every set of new players.
Excellent communication skills:
A team sport or any relation be it professional or personal needs effective communication to grow stronger with time. A good coach must be able to express what he feels, it may be criticism or praise that will help the athlete. Clear communication means setting goals, giving direct feedback, and reinforcing the key messages.
They must be able to share ideas and suggestions while being open to their thoughts too. When your coach can easily explain the why behind each training session or the reason for a particular strategy, your team members will be better prepared and know what to do in certain situations.
Motivational skills:
Each day is different, some days your athletes want to give their all while practicing, and on some you might have to push them toward the field. Motivation is a subjective and personal topic that fluctuates depending on the athlete and the factors motivating them.
As a coach, it is important you keep them pumped and motivated to do better every time and remind them why they are playing. Team huddles or a quick chat before a game can help them to perform better. When encouraging a player, a good coach emphasizes striving to achieve performance goals rather than result in goals. The foundations of good coaching are enjoyment and fun.
Skills like flexibility, listening, and discipline:
Good coaches are flexible. They seek methods to improve not only themselves but also how they approach and communicate with each team member. Adaptable coaches excel over those who are unwilling to adjust to the learner and insist on teaching or coaching everyone in the same manner. The coach must be a good listener and understand where the player is coming from. Not just act like they are heard, but show them that with actions.
Finally, a good coach must be self-disciplined. Remember that if you want to be a professional athlete, you must be disciplined and ready for frequent training, strict exercise, and a rigorous nutrition regimen. The top coaches will not only talk the talk but will also walk the walk and practice discipline.
When you are on the lookout for a good coach, remember that factors like experience, reputation, commitment, etc also play a role. The coach must be committed to the team, the sport, and their success. Even if it does not come easy, they must not give up on them. They must lead by example and also be passionate about the game.
Here are 3 things you can do to find a good coach:
Seek advice from other athletes, sporting organizations, or trainers. Get feedback from people who have had positive experiences with coaches in the sport or discipline of your choice.
Enquire about the coach’s credentials, certifications, and relevant experience. Check to see if they have experience teaching athletes at your level or in your desired sport.
Check that the coach’s coaching style, mindset, and communication methods are compatible with your requirements and preferences. Make it clear what you expect in terms of training frequency, duration, schedule, and fees. Understand the coach’s availability and dedication to your growth.
The task may seem tedious and long but your relationship with the coach determines many factors in your career so the time and effort will be worth it!
