 Ever heard ‘you are what you eat’, well it couldn’t be more apt for athletes! What they consume daily is regularly monitored and changed in a way that suits their body type. You can’t ask a weightlifting player to eat only 2000 calories every day, just like you can’t ask a runner to eat 5000 calories! 

Sports nutrition in layman’s terms essentially means a well-balanced diet and plan that will help increase one’s athletic performance. Achieving optimal performance in sports often requires providing the body with the right balance of nutrients, fluids, and food types such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and fiber. This aims to maximize energy levels, support muscle recovery, and enhance overall athletic performance. While commonly associated with endurance and strength-based sports, this principle applies to various athletic disciplines.

Athletes have always been scrutinized by their coaches, parents, or colleagues over what they should and should not eat. However, such information/advice does not come from individuals, but rather from medical study findings.

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) provided data compiled from numerous sources on recommended nutrition for athletes, stating, “that physical activity, athletic performance, and recovery from exercise are enhanced by optimal nutrition.”As a result, athletes should carefully examine their daily food intake to ensure that their bodies are obtaining the nutrients they require to repair, maintain, and develop muscle.

Sports nutrition is also referred to as exercise nutrition. Like the connections between food and disease or food and infant physiology, the relationship between food and sports is important.  It is defined as “the application of nutrition principles to improve training, recovery, and performance.” 

But why is sports nutrition important?

Athletes and sportsmen place a high value on sports nutrition since it has a direct impact on their performance and overall well-being.  Sports nutrition plays a critical role in boosting athletes’ abilities and optimizing their potential by identifying and addressing their specific nutritional demands. 

  1. Energy and endurance: Proper diet, with an appropriate mix of carbs, proteins, and fats, gives the energy and fuel required for athletic activities. It aids sportsmen in maintaining peak stamina and endurance throughout training and competition.
  1. Performance Optimization: Sports nutrition focuses on determining the optimal balance and proportion of nutrients to enhance athletic performance. Athletes can improve their performance by providing the body with what it needs at the right times.
  1. Sport-Specific Plan: Each sport has its own set of demands, and sports nutrition takes these into account when creating customized nutrition plans.  This personalized method takes into account athletes’ individual dietary requirements and performance goals in their respective sports.
  1. Sports nutrition recognizes the importance of micronutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, in promoting muscle development, improving performance, preserving overall health, and enabling injury recovery.
  2. Optimal Supplementation: Sports nutritionists help athletes with choosing and incorporating nutritional supplements that can improve their performance, address nutrient shortages, and support their demands.

But do you wonder what the difference is between the type of nutrition and diet athletes consumed in the early 1900s or so? Was being an athlete as simple as it is now with the variety of supplements, sports drinks, etc available?

THEN: Athletes did not overthink their diets years ago. They ate whatever calories they could find. The athlete’s intake was prioritized over the nutrients it offered.  

NOW: There is a major split in the ideal overall diet for today’s athletes: meat versus no meat, carbs versus keto. Regardless of the divide, athletes realize that nutrition is individualized and tailored to certain performance goals. While the discussion over the ‘optimal’ diet will continue, the most significant modern breakthrough in sports nutrition is how individualized things are becoming. Athletes can focus on addressing their unique needs by using personal sports nutritionists, apps, digital gadgets, genetic testing, and vitamin/mineral panels.

So much has changed in the evolution of the field since the early and mid-twentieth centuries. The majority of findings developed were warmly embraced and used correctly by sporting communities. Some of the findings, however, were twisted for the wrong reasons, leading to an increase in the usage of steroids and performance-enhancing drugs. The advancement of technology has also had a significant impact on the advancement of sports nutrition. And like any other field, there have been many pros and cons of this change. 

THEN: In the early 1900s, it was typical for athletes to forgo food and drink during competitions.  Personal opinion, instinct, and superstition dominated knowledge about what to eat, and there were no systematic norms. Athletes frequently experienced race-ending GI problems. 

NOW: The benefit of the mid-training intake of carbohydrates was formally recognized in the 1930s. This revelation led to endurance athletes reducing their intake of animal proteins before competition in favor of high-carbohydrate diets. Rice, pasta, and potatoes became widespread staples, and the development of Gatorade in the 1960s accelerated the process even more. This was a big breakthrough in sports nutrition since it offered players a science-backed energy source to take throughout training. This also emphasized the importance of electrolytes and hydration needs during sports.

With time there has been significant evolution in all fields related to sports and nutrition. Athletes are now more aware of what they put into their bodies and how it affects them. They have a variety of resources to help them manage their diets and regime.
